Understanding Article Processing Charges β and how to publish in top Scopus journals for free or at reduced cost.
Free for authors AND free for readers. Funded by academic institutions, governments, or scholarly societies. Best option for Indian researchers without grant funding.
Readers/institutions pay for access but authors publish free. Most Elsevier, Springer, SAGE, and Taylor & Francis subscription journals fall here. Choose the subscription route at submission.
Authors pay APC, article is freely accessible. High-impact journals like Nature Communications (~$5,490) and Frontiers journals (~$2,950) use this model. Waivers often available.
Subscription journal that offers an optional paid OA route. If you choose subscription (no open access), there is no APC. Always choose subscription unless you have a funder mandate.
Eligible Indian institutions can access APC waivers under Elsevier's Research4Life program. Check eligibility at research4life.org. Many LMIC researchers qualify for full waivers on select Gold OA journals.
Springer Nature has read-and-publish agreements with some Indian institutions. If your university has a deal, you may publish OA at no extra charge. Check with your institutional library.
PLOS journals offer fee waivers for researchers in lower-middle income countries. India researchers may qualify. Apply during manuscript submission β it is confidential and does not affect editorial decisions.
Taylor & Francis offers institutional OA agreements. Indian researchers at IITs and central universities may have access. Check with your library for OA publishing discounts.
MDPI and Frontiers offer individual APC waiver applications based on financial need. Apply before submitting your manuscript for a responsive process.
If you have a DST-SERB, CSIR, DBT, ICMR, or ICAR research grant, APC costs are typically reimbursable as a project expense. Include APC as a line item in your project budget.
